La Pilande Basse is a private residence: a beautifully restored water mill in southern France in the Tarn River Valley. The property has been completely redone, including the millworks for flour, and another mill for walnut oil, with all modern conveniences, but in keeping with its 18th century origins. This is a unique offering, since there are very few mills left in France with their millworks intact.
The property is nestled in a private, south-facing canyon, on 1.3 hectares (3.2 acres) of lush spring-feed terraced gardens, within minutes of several lovely villages. There's a spectacular 20-foot waterfall in the backyard as well as two other cascades next to the back terrace.
An 18th century stone bridge leads to the main house, a handsome stone building with a stone roof, and over 3,300 square feet of living space, sits high above the Mousse River, a tributary of the Tarn. There is a separate guesthouse, with its own kitchen, studio, and terrace overlooking the main waterfall. The detached barn with over 900 square feet of studio space could easily be converted to more guest suites. There is a separate studio/study space next to the river. In all, there are 4+ bedroom suites and 3 baths.
The kitchen was designed for serious cooks, including a massive stone sink and a new Lacanche stove with 4 ovens and a newly restored 6-foot brick bread oven in the upper barn.
