The Society for the Preservation of Old Mills - SPOOM Waterwheel Grant Payment Form

WATERWHEEL GRANT OFFER
Robert Vitale of the Waterwheel Factory has made a generous offer to members of SPOOM. He proposed a grant program for member mills that need new metal waterwheels. The SPOOM Board has agreed to process the applications for him and make a recommendation. Applications for the grant should be sent to the SPOOM Grant Committee for review and Bob will build a wheel, at cost, for the chosen mill. He will donate his design, labor, and the profit that he ordinarily makes on his waterwheels to one mill site each year.

The grant recipient would still incur the cost of materials, fabrication, shipping, and equipment necessary to install the wheel—but the total cost of the waterwheel would be
substantially discounted. Regular cost guidelines for metal waterwheels are given on the Waterwheel Factory’s website:
www.WaterwheelFactory.com.

Only those mills with sufficient budget for the “out of pocket” expenses need fill out the grant application and a rough cost could be given to the mill when an application is submitted.
In summary, the grant recipient would be responsible for the following costs:
• Fabrication materials (steel, hardware, etc.)
• Fabrication labor (performed by a machine shop of Bob’s choice)
• Shipping (i.e. transporting the wheel parts to the mill site).
• Erection (assembly of the wheel at the site, including any travel cost incurred by the Waterwheel Factory

Once a mill site has been selected and a wheel has been designed, the Waterwheel Factory will issue a formal proposal outlining the actual costs. The recipient would then have to pay up-front the costs defined within the proposal. A copy of the proposal would also be sent to SPOOM. If the applicant is unable to meet the financial guidelines, the grant committee will select another mill.

The selected mill will be announced at SPOOM’s annual meeting in the fall.
